We are seeking academics in cybersecurity to carry out research, teach and help with the running of the department. We’re particularly interested in people with research interests around fundamental aspects of cybersecurity, including but not limited to post-quantum cryptography, formal methods and verification, complexity, logical systems and type theory.

You’ll be part of the Mathematical Foundations of Computation research group, within the Department of Computer Science. The group’s work has been honoured with prizes (IEEE LICS Kleene award; IEEE LICS Test of Time Award; Sacks Prize) and we have strong international connections. Your research might also engage with the other groups in the Department: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction and Visual Computing.

We will offer you support and growth opportunities, including mentoring and opportunities to progress, manage and lead. You will offer a strong research record and the ability and enthusiasm to create an engaging experience for our excellent students.

What you will do

Research – You’ll work with colleagues, students and researchers to develop and publish papers. You’ll apply for research funding to support your ideas. You’ll find ways of making your research available to society, for example, by working with industry, developing spin outs, collaborating with charities, influencing policy makers or delivering talks and demonstrations to excite wider audiences.

Teaching – You’ll design and deliver teaching, for example through lectures, tutorials and labs. You’ll be educating and inspiring some of the brightest students in the country, delivering an engaging experience and supportive programme.

Helping with the running of the department - You’ll have a few internal roles to help the Department run smoothly. You might help with student placements, ethics processes, or lead a research team.

Support and growth opportunities we will give you

HEA Fellowship training – We’ll enrol you on the Pathway to HEA Fellowship, which offers the skills and support you need for the teaching aspect of your role. The course lasts three years, after which you’ll become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Mentoring - All our staff are allocated a mentor who offers support in your day to day job and helps you progress.

Opportunities to progress, manage and lead - We’re a growing team and there are lots of opportunities to grow with us.

Opportunities to collaborate and build on our networks - We have developed strong networks across sectors such as entertainment, sport, healthcare and digital technologies. You’ll be able to work with and build on these networks to help with your research and to attract more funding.

About you

You’ll hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and have a strong academic record. You may have published papers, post-doctoral research experience or experience tutoring, giving lectures or leading a team.

You’ll have shown the initiative and enthusiasm to:

  • be a research leader – you’re keen to lead research projects, and you may even have led some already
  • take your research further – you look for ways your research can have impact in the wider world. You may have done some public engagement work or your research may have been taken up by another organisation
